You don’t have to be an expert to make a difference. Sometimes, what you know today is exactly what someone else needs to learn tomorrow.” but maybe something which i have figured out can make the journey a little easier for someone just starting out.

Finding clients easily or typically is one skill. Finding clients who understand the value of good content is another. Some clients focus only on the lowest price that you offer. On the other hand, some clients care about the quality of content. How much research is done while writing that content on a particular topic. How well it is written for audience engagement and lastly the output for business in terms of results. So your major goal should be to build relationships with clients who offer consistent work, respect deadlines, and value your contribution.

Freelance content writing can easily be added as a reliable source of income. You do not need a traditional office job to write for global businesses. Because of this, you are able to build up your savings sitting in your living room. Writing content on any topic according to the skills and knowledge is a different experience for everyone and it comes after years of experience. So, in this guide, I have explained lessons I have learned firsthand and the insights that have shaped my journey.

1.
First, How to Start Your Freelance Content Writing Journey

So before looking for clients, you need to decide what type of content writing services you want to offer. Because businesses hire freelance writers for different purposes.

Once you start your journey as content writer some business owners will hire you to write blogs & articles to answer customer questions. However, some owners look for good freelancers to write the content for their website pages, product descriptions, email newsletters, or educational resources.

From my experience, I would first recommend all freelancers to first understand what businesses expect from their content before deciding which services to provide. Framework that you can follow from your very first setup to closing a deal.

Step 1: Choose Your Writing Services

Every freelancer should start with one or two writing formats that match the skills and interests.

For example like someone should write:

Practical Note: If you’re comfortable researching topics and explaining information clearly, blog writing maybe a good starting point.

Step 2: Select Your Writing Niche

After knowing which writing format matches the skills, every freelance content writer should choose one or two topics you understand or are interested in writing or learning.

Topics for example:

  1. Technology
  2. Education
  3. Finance
  4. Travel
  5. Content Writing for SEO
  6. Furniture Business
  7. Insurance
  8. Interior Designers

Because if you focus on writing in any particular area it can help you develop relevant knowledge and create writing samples that appeal to a particular type of client.  Although, you can explore other niches as your experience grows.

Step 3: Create Your Writing Portfolio

Now, once you have selected which niche or nature of writing you will go with, you should prepare two or three writing samples. It will show your research, writing, and editing abilities as a good content writer. You don’t need previous paid assignments to build a portfolio. You can create your own sample articles and publish them online.

Step 4: Build a Professional Profile

Once you are done with creating your writing portfolio you need to create a freelance profile that explains what you write, which topics you cover, and where potential clients can review your samples.

Step 5: Find Relevant Writing Opportunities

As a freelance content writer you can find projects through freelance marketplaces like Upwork, Fiverr, Toptal, Freelancer.com, Contra and many more for direct outreach.

There are many platforms that connect freelancing content writers with business owners who are looking for skilled writers. So it is essential that you are aware of where to find the best clients before you begin the writing process.

3. What to Write in Your Freelance Writing Profile

Like when we say “ first impression is the last impression”, so your freelance profile should look like a well-defined business card. When any client visits your profile, they should quickly be able to understand what type of writing you provide and where they can see examples of your work.

You should avoid making a complicated profile. Just write clear and relevant information which matters a lot more than the promotional descriptions. Clients should know in less than three seconds what you can provide for them.

1. Header Line (Should be Clear): Write a short headline which explains your writing services. For example: “Freelance Writer assisting finance companies to generate more web traffic using just blogs.”

2. About Me Section (Should be Simple): Your About section should state your services, subject knowledge, and writing approach.

For example:

“I am a freelance content writer who writes blogs & articles for websites. What I specialize in is researching topics, organizing them and then writing the content that answers the questions of the target audience. My content consists of articles and guides.”

You can review my writing samples through the portfolio link below and contact me to discuss your content requirements.” State a common problem for any company first; then, present yourself as a quick solution; finally, give an instruction for them to contact you directly using Direct Message (DM).

3. Contact Information: You should include your professional Email address and never forget to give a link to your business online portfolio. Before sharing the link of your professional portfolio always check if that link is working or not.

4. What to Put in Your Portfolio

This is a common and important question that comes to every beginner’s mind about what to write in the portfolio and what evidence should be provided to the client. For this, you can create your own writing examples to show to the potential clients what you are capable of in writing relevant content.

1. Choose one or two writing niches.
2. Create two or three relevant writing samples.
3. Focus on the relevance of the portfolio, not just the quantity.
4. Publish your writing samples on popular online platforms to showcase the results.

When training beginners, I generally recommend focusing on the above-mentioned points. Because this gives you an opportunity to develop subject knowledge and prepare samples relevant to the work you want.

7. My Practical Advice for Beginners Who Want Long-Term Writing Clients

To wrap up, I want to share the exact strategies I teach my own students. As a digital marketing trainer in Ghaziabad, one thing I encourage beginners whether it is my student or an online reader, to understand is that learning how to write and understanding why a business needs content are related but different skills.

That being said, what I would really recommend is developing knowledge on the marketing funnels while you develop your writing skill set. Knowing how the email flows, sales landing pages, and search ads will increase the value of your writing three times instantly.

Furthermore, my proven roadmap for long-term success relies on client retention. Do not simply deliver a document and disappear. Show the client how you have achieved those very results through the specific traffic and clicks from their copywriting.

In conclusion, mostly the highest paid writers are actually skilled or expert marketers who write content. If you would like to follow my training techniques you can just go ahead and gain knowledge of how to turn skills from a plain content writing freelancer into a trusted content partner that will allow you to set your own prices. Start with what you already know, improve your writing samples, look for relevant opportunities, and keep learning from the work you do.

If you are looking to make your career in Content Writing with internship and job placement then you should focus on getting practical skills apart from the theories. iConnectDM provides a superior method of learning at the best digital marketing institute in Ghaziabad with small batches, budgets, and free agency internships.
